Book
Launched to celebrate 60th Anniversary! |
|
2006 was
a milestone for Ker & Downey, which celebrated
60 years in the safari business in May. To commemorate
the anniversary we commissioned Miles Bredin to write
a book — Sixty Years of Safari. It is beautifully
illustrated with photographs spanning six decades.
Miles takes readers on a journey through the decades
with tales of famous and infamous guests, close encounters
with wildlife, and a look at the guides and hunters
that created the business from the post-World War
II era of game hunting to today’s photographic
safari. |

On 4 May 1946, following the end of distinguished careers
in World War II, veteran hunters Syd
Downey and Donald Ker met on the veranda
of the Imperial Hotel in Addis
Ababa, both wondering what to do now that their service
had ended. The result was the launch of Ker and Downey
– the oldest and most renowned safari outfitter in East
Africa. It has been said that Ker and Downey was
the best large-scale operation in Kenya offering both
shooting and photographic safaris.
Their first client, in 1946, was the film company for
The Macomber Affair, Kenya’s first post-war movie.
Ker and Downey’s
reputation and expertise continues to make them the preferred
outfitter of international film companies. Ker
and Downey have handled location camps
on motion pictures such as Out of Africa, The
Colour Purple, Gorillas in the Mist and Mountains
of the Moon.
Today,
the operation is a partnership of 15 guides including
Ninian who take great pride in continuing
the safari tradition that was established almost 60 years
ago. Our head offices are based in Nairobi – providing
24 hour back up for our guides
whilst they are in the bush.
Ker
and Downey Safaris Kenya is
a legendary company that launched the
era of luxury safaris, its history
and roots embedded in the heart of Africa. |
