About Ninian Lowis
The cheetah pictured here lives in the Masai Mara and has featured in the BBC documentary series - The Big Cat Diary.

"I have thought a great deal about what our visit to Kenya meant.  It is, of course, quite impossible to describe.  We took as given that the scenery, wildlife and activities would be breathtaking. They were - both literally and figuratively. What warms our hearts when we think of Kenya is the sense of rhythm, connection and harmony that coursed through our days...seemingly with no effort. You did all the obvious things with such deftness and flare. The choice of itinerary, the quality of support, the nice details and extra flourishes, the willingness to always go the extra step may come naturally to you, but we all recognize what careful and committed efforts they required.  I hope you will be available to take us on another magical mystery tour in Africa someday." Guides don’t come any better than Ker & Downey Safaris’ Ninian Lowis. Ninian has lived in Kenya all his life. The son of one of East Africa’s most respected guides, he spent much of his boyhood in wild and remote areas. His upbringing gave him a passionate interest in Africa’s wildlife, people and places, as well as an encyclopaedic knowledge of the bush and all that can be found in it. Out on safari with Ninian there is always something to see, from grand events such as thousands of zebra crossing a swollen river, to small delicate miracles like the symbiotic relationship between ants and the whistling thorn acacia bush.

After gaining an Honours degree in Environmental Biology at Oxford Brookes University, Ninian returned to Africa. Running safaris gave him a way to be in the wilderness that he loves so much. As well as running adventure and luxury safaris in Kenya and Tanzania, he has led boat trips up the Omo River in southern Ethiopia, taken groups to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro, tracked gorillas in the mountains of Rwanda and Uganda and guided guests in Southern Africa. His work with Dr. Meave Leakey instilled a lasting interest in paleoanthropology and human evolution.

Lengthy experience in the bush as well as his extensive knowledge has earned Ninian a loyal following. Departing guests often remark on his boundless energy and passion. As a guest recently wrote of her trip with Ninian: “ Kenya through your eyes has been an extraordinary experience - certainly the most exciting of my life! You have a wonderful way of communicating your vast knowledge and enthusiasm.”
